Making bread

As part of our summer topic, we have learnt about what a baker shop is and what it sells.

Last week, we had a visit from the daughter of a baker that used to have a shop in East Harling (near the current chemists) We found out all about her experiences living above a bakers shop including waking up and smelling the bread baking that her Dad had begun making at 4am each day, and helping to deliver loaves of bread to people in East Harling whilst on a bike.

We thought about what ingredients are in bread, and used the 'Little Red Hen' story to learn about the sequence of how bread is made.

We then looked at a bread recipe, and made our own bread dough. The children were brilliant at kneading the dough.

We watched as the yeast made the dough rise.

Then baked the bread.

The next day we all tried a piece of the bread we had weighed out, mixed and kneaded. The children loved it.

Bressingham School Trip

We all had a wonderful day visiting Bressingham Steam and Gardens museum for our Year One school trip. Thank you to all the adults who volunteered to come on the trip, and to all the children who were fantastic explorers, listeners, and observers. It was a magical day.

We began our day with a ride on a diesel engine, around Bressingham. What did you see out of the window?

We then visited the gardens. We thought about what things we could see that are plants, and revised our knowledge on what makes a plant grow. Then we looked at the different trees and plants in the gardens, which were beautiful. We saw a squirrel scurrying up a tree, and thought about the other creatures that might visit the garden.

We noticed the different colours on all the plants, bushes, flowers and trees, and used a green colour chart to find and match various shades of green, We couldn't believe quite how many greens there were.

We then found a fairy garden, and began a story about fairies. We thought up our fairy character and where they were living, then added to the story as we explored the garden.

We imagined trolls sleeping on the bridge and so crept under it to not disturb them. We thought that witches might live in the hut.We imagined what could be in the pond that we could add to our story.

The class came up with some super ideas, and showed that you can make up a story using anything that sparks your imagination.

Lunchtime next, and we all tucked into our packed lunches.

After lunch, we went indoors to a street of shops, to learn more about the 'history of shops' which links in with our current whole topic about the 'History of East Harling'.

We found a printers, toy shop, butchers and sweet shop. We looked at what the shops were for and what types of things they sold, how the goods were stored and other equipment in the shops like the tills, balances etc. We recognised that, in the past, shops normally sold one type of goods (like meat sold at butchers, bread sold at bakers etc) that shops were smaller, and that they didn't have so much variety, as we do have in our shops now.

We then looked around at the various vehicles (bikes, vans, trains) that were used to transport food and goods around, and realised that in the past, most people walked or cycled to their shops. Some food was wheeled around on carts, or was delivered to your home on a bicycle. We recognised that only post is still delivered this way now.

We went on a postal delivery train, and looked at some toy trains, that we could make move around a track.

We finished the day with the whole class having a ride on the 'Gallopers', and played some games on the grass together.

It was a great day and we all had lots of fun.
